‘Terminator: Dark Fate’ thrilling enough as nostalgic sequel

Directed by Tim Miller (Deadpool), Terminator: Dark Fate offers a too-familiar storyline (and nostalgia thanks to Hamilton and Schwarzenegger) for fans of the franchise.

Since the popular Terminator franchise created by James Cameron and Gale Anne Hurd was introduced in 1984, we have been entertained by four sequels that remain loyal to the origin storyline of the great war between the human race led by John Connor’s Resistance forces and Skynet’s artificial intelligence (AI) machines.

Although not a big fan of the series, I enjoyed the first two films, which were co-written and directed by Cameron. The others, however, especially Terminator Salvation (2009) and Terminator Genisys (2015) are much less memorable. So when news broke regarding the release of another sequel in 2019, Terminator: Dark Fate, I was considerably unenthusiastic and went to the press screening with low expectations.

Turns out Terminator: Dark Fate is far from a disappointing sequel.

‘Batman v Superman’: Epic yet baffling battle of superheroes

The film’s explosive action scenes and attractive visuals deserve some praise, but its poor storytelling and plot twists might also leave viewers feeling baffled rather than entertained.

With legendary actors like 80-year-old Ian McKellen and 74-year-old Helen Mirren in the lead roles, The Good Liar is one of those movies that you could expect to be failproof — at least acting-wise.

‘Hustlers’ lacks depth yet still entertains

Aside from the spirit of “girl power”, Hustlers is rich in inclusivity, which is a common thing nowadays.

Banned in Malaysia for “excessive obscene content”, Hustlers held a press screening in Jakarta with quite an interesting celebration: a spectacle of pole dancers showing their skills on two poles specially installed inside the Plaza Senayan cinema area.

‘Fantastic Beasts 2’ boasts more thrilling magic and mysteries

Co-produced and written by Rowling herself, one can expect this sequel to offer juicy mysteries and layered story lines, as the author masterfully maintains the audience’s curiosity throughout the movie’s twists and turns up until the very last scene.

The second of five of J.K. Rowling’s all new adventures in the wizarding world, Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, is undoubtedly among the most anticipated movies this year.

Although sequels often disappoint, this one offers enough punch with magic and mystery to make fans impatiently wait for the next installment.
